The Weekend Wellness Project
Have you ever gone the whole weekend without a proper meal? How about almost every weekend? It happens and we want that to change for our guests.
Our Weekend Wellness Meals have been a success The number of people using our services on the weekend and their feedback has shown us there is a great need for our meal services on Saturdays and Sundays.
A survey about 4 months into the restart of weekend meals found that most surveyed had, and would do without real meals on the weekends if The Bread of Life were not open. Many would stay at home or on the street - alone and hungry.
Thanks to Vancouver Island Health Authority and Alberni Valley United Church for grants that funded the first phase of this project, we are now open 7 days a week (excluding stats) for breakfast and lunch.
Our guests not only receive nutritious meals, they enjoy the company of other community members in a safe and cooperative environment. Social interactions and a sense of community are great for the soul!
We are proud of the work we have put into expanding our services and the success it has been...and SO grateful for the support of those who volunteer and our staff that work so hard to provide nutritious meals. Rod, our kitchen supervisor/Chef Extraordinaire works hard (and kind of magically) during the week, not only cooking all weekday meals, but organizing food, meals, staff and menus to ensure a smooth service of meals for our weekend staff, volunteers and guests.
It is our hope that we can sustain the weekend meals and we can only do that with more fundraising, continuous and increased donor support and increased volunteer numbers. If you think you can help in any of these areas, please contact us at the office. If you are unavailable to donate, or volunteer, please consider supporting us by encouraging others to donate or volunteer. If you want to learn more, please call or stop by the office Monday - Friday 9-3. If you have a group that would like to learn more via presentation, that can be arranged as well. There are so many ways to support the society and we are grateful for all and any of the help that we receive.
